How a Medicare Supplement works
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) leaves you paying deductibles, 20% coinsurance on most Part B services, and hospital costs after long stays, with no yearly limit. In 2026 the Part A hospital deductible alone is $1,736 per benefit period. A Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, pays most or all of those costs.
- No networks. Any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
- No referrals to see a specialist.
- Predictable costs. A monthly premium, then little or nothing when you get care.
- Standardized by law. Plan G from one company covers exactly what Plan G covers from another.
- Guaranteed renewable. The company can't cancel your policy because of your health, as long as you pay the premium.
- No drug coverage. You add a separate Part D drug plan.

About 940,000 Floridians have a Medicare Supplement. Plan F still has the most members (47%) because older enrollees kept it, but Plan G (29%) and Plan N (11%) are the main choices for people turning 65 today. Source: NerdWallet, CMS data.

High-deductible Plan G
High-deductible Plan G covers the same things as Plan G, but only after you pay a yearly deductible set by Medicare. In exchange, the premium is much lower; in Florida some high-deductible Plan G premiums start under $100 a month.
It can make sense if you're healthy and have savings to cover the deductible in a bad year. We show you the break-even point: how much care you'd need before regular Plan G would have been cheaper.

Why the same plan costs different amounts
More detail: what Plan G costs in Florida.
- The insurance company. Each company sets its own price for the same standardized plan.
- Your age when you buy. Florida requires issue-age pricing, so your rate is based on your age when you buy the policy, not how old you get.
- Rate increases. Issue-age doesn't mean your premium never rises. Companies can still raise rates for everyone in a plan because of medical inflation and claims. We look at each company's rate history.
- Tobacco use, sex and ZIP code. All can change your price.
- Household discounts. Many companies offer a discount if you live with a spouse or partner.
How we compare Medicare Supplement companies
Because Plan G is the same everywhere, the company you choose matters for price and service, not coverage. For each company we represent, we check:
- Today's premium for your age, ZIP code and household.
- Rate increase history, since a low price that jumps every year costs more over time.
- Financial strength, using independent ratings such as A.M. Best.
- Claims handling. Most Medigap claims are paid automatically after Medicare pays, through the Medicare crossover system, so you rarely file paperwork.
- Discounts for households, annual payment or bank draft.
Example: Plan G vs Plan N in a typical year
Take someone in Broward who sees a doctor 8 times and makes one ER visit in a year. With Plan N, they'd pay the $283 Part B deductible, up to $160 in office copays and up to $50 for the ER: up to $493 plus premiums. With Plan G, they'd pay only the $283 deductible plus premiums.
If Plan N costs $35 a month less ($420 a year), Plan N still comes out about $210 ahead. More visits, ER trips or specialists who charge excess fees shrink that gap, and can make Plan G the better buy. We run this math with your own numbers.
Florida Medigap rules you should know
- Issue-age pricing only. All Florida Medicare Supplement policies must be sold on an issue-age basis, so your premium won't rise just because you get older.
- 30-day free look. You can return a new policy within 30 days for a full refund.
- Pre-existing conditions. A company can't exclude benefits for a pre-existing condition for more than 6 months.
- Under 65 with a disability or ESRD. You get a 6-month window to buy a Supplement with guaranteed issue once you have Parts A and B, and another open enrollment when you turn 65.
- Grace periods. 10 days for monthly premiums, 31 days for quarterly or annual.
The best time to buy: your first six months
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the month you're 65 or older and enrolled in Part B, and lasts six months. During it, companies must sell you any Supplement they offer at their standard price, whatever your health.
After it ends, companies can usually ask health questions, charge more, or decline you, unless you have a guaranteed issue right: for example, your Advantage plan leaves your area, or you lose employer retiree coverage that paid after Medicare. Florida doesn't have a yearly "switch anytime" window like a few other states. See the turning-65 timeline.
Switching from Medicare Advantage to a Supplement later
Many people start on a $0-premium Advantage plan and plan to switch later. It's often harder than they expect.
- Your trial right: if you joined Advantage when you first became eligible at 65, you can switch to a Supplement within the first 12 months without health questions.
- If you left a Supplement to try Advantage for the first time, you can usually get a Supplement back within 12 months.
- After that, in most cases you'll answer health questions, and a condition like heart disease or diabetes can mean a "no."
That's why we compare both options before your 65th birthday, not after.
Snowbirds and travel
A Supplement works with any provider that accepts Medicare, in Florida, New York, Ohio or anywhere else in the country, and most plans add emergency coverage abroad. Most Advantage plans are built around a local network. If you split the year between two states, a Supplement is usually the simpler choice.
Why Palm Beach leans toward Supplements
Only 48% of Palm Beach County's 370,910 Medicare-eligible residents are in Medicare Advantage, compared with 65% in Broward. Medicare in Palm Beach County.

Medicare Supplement questions
Is Medigap the same as a Medicare Supplement?
Yes. Medigap and Medicare Supplement are two names for the same insurance.
What is the most popular Medigap plan in Florida?
Plan F has the most members because it was the top choice before 2020. For people new to Medicare, Plan G is now the most popular choice, followed by Plan N.
Do Medicare Supplement plans cover prescriptions?
No. You pair a Medicare Supplement with a separate Part D drug plan.
Will my Medigap premium go up as I get older in Florida?
Not because of age alone. Florida requires issue-age pricing, but companies can still raise rates for everyone in a plan because of medical costs.
Can I get a Medicare Supplement if I'm under 65 in Florida?
Yes. If you have Medicare because of a disability or ESRD, Florida gives you 6 months of guaranteed issue after you enroll in Parts A and B, and another window at 65.
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Supplement later?
Within your first 12 months on Advantage after turning 65, usually yes, without health questions. After that, in most cases the company can ask health questions and may decline you.
